I'm a BIG fan of Gill masks. They provide superior protection and comfort, but they are best in calm and climate controlled situations.
The fit and seal are fine. Neither of my kids or I (in a large) have had any trouble breathing in them.
It will get swampy if you exert yourself or wear it in warmer weather.
Deducted 1 star because the filter door can pop open if subjected to jarring activity (like when my 8 year old jumped off a 4 foot high platform on the first day of school). A little strip of clear packing tape will keep it closed, but I feel like that shouldn't be necessary.
The Gill masks work GREAT for calm activities (sitting on train, walking in store, going to class), but you might want to have something else handy for gym and recess
Gill Mask Small - Crushed my Hopes
In the height of the Delta variant surge, I really was hopeful that the Gill Mask was going to provide my kids and our family the much needed protection and reassurance that we needed especially given the fact that my kids' school has decided to get rid of all COVID precautions and return to school like pre COVID days. Masks are optional if a family chooses to do so, but during orientation day, hardly any families were wearing masks. With that said, let's start with the positives: 1) The mask arrived quickly and in good and new condition 2) The fit and seal of the mask was great. 3) My kids felt that the mask was comfortable.
Now the NEGATIVE: 1) It is extremely hard to breathe with it on. Both of my kids tried on the mask with various filter materials, and they both stated that they could not breathe. I thought they were just being dramatic, so I tried the mask on myself, and there was no drama at all. The breathability of the mask is incredibly low. As a reference point, I am in healthcare, and I have been wearing an N95 mask with ASTM level 3 surgical over that and a face shield for 9 to 10 hour shifts, 5 days a week and never once complained about breathability. Just 30 seconds wearing the Gill Mask was enough to know that there was no way I could let alone my kids wear this mask for any useable amount of time. The surface area of the filter element is just too small to allow any reasonable amount of inhalation and exhalation. I really wanted this option to work, but unfortunately, the mask will sit on shelf collecting dust as a souvenir to show our grandkids when we talk about the COVID outbreak of 2020. A mask is only useful if it can be worn for an extended period of time, and the Gill Mask Small cannot be worn for more than a minute or two. So it is back to races to find a protective and reliable option for my kids.
Bad seal and lose filter holder. Rather stick with n95
Got it for my 7 year old. The mask didn’t seal well at all for him. Did not seal as the 3 other n95 he uses which provide a way better fit and seal. The filter holder is pretty loose and I can’t imagine it properly filtering out as well as an n95. Will be sticking to our 3m and moldex n95-n100 masks instead
I ordered the regular Gill Mask and found it to be a bit too big. Well constructed but just too large. Tried the Small size. Awful. The mask is very flat. If you could grab the edges and flex them in about 20 degrees more it would probably fit but the face cushion on the small is almost flat. I don't know anyone, adult or child, that has a face this flat. I gave two stars because it is well constructed and was shipped quickly. But I found it totally unusable. I didn't bother with a refund because it was only $11.50 and you have to pay shipping on returns (per web site policy) and it's not worth the trouble for the few bucks I'd get back. It's a shame. If they made the regular mask, just in a smaller size it would have probably been great.
Great for most kids however not for kids on the smaller side.
Definitely a kids’ mask however not for smaller or younger children. I got 2 of these masks for my 6 and 7 year old and more specifically for my 6 year old who was born with only half of a working heart. The mask unfortunately doesn’t fit him as he is on the smaller side; however I gave this mask to my niece who is almost 8 and it fit her perfect! (Side note, she was born with a head size in the 99th percentile!) So if you are part of the high risk kid group, I would definitely get this mask for them so you can feel safer now that it feels as though the world has forgotten these precious children.
